Cannabis

Cannabis is a plant found in the Cannabaceae family and is known to have more than eighty active constituents, also known as biological compounds. This article intends to shed light on the currently used and most studied compounds found in CBD products.

There are two types of cannabis plants – marijuana and hemp. The first is the type that contains THC compounds with well-known intoxicating effects, and is the one mainstream society seems to worry about most. The second, is the type of plant used for manufacturing CBD extracts, and is considered legal in the US (with some limitations.)

CBD can now be found throughout the market in many different products like drugs, foods, dietary supplements and cosmetics. This flagship ingredient has been the focus of much study and debate in the past decade, especially since the Farm Bill passed in 2018. Since then, a hailstorm of CBD companies have been saturating the alternative health scene.

At Pure Hemp Botanicals we use whole hemp, plant-based cannabinoids in all of our products. Founded by  the principles of sustainability and efficacy, our CBD company takes pride in all the naturally occurring phytonutrients.

“A powerful wellness tool, our full spectrum and broad spectrum CBD naturally supports homeostasis in your endocannabinoid system so you feel your best. Experience the benefits of whole body balance.”

Spectrum

At Pure Hemp Botanicals we differentiate between the two.

Broad spectrum contains a broad profile on cannabinoids like the kingpin CBD, and minor ones like CBC, CBG and  CBN – without detectable levels of THC. Beneficial terpenes and other hemp derived compounds still occur in these formulations, to supply a balance of health support.

Full spectrum contains a more complete supply of cannabinoids, flavonoids and terpenes; including CBD, minor cannabinoids such as CBN, CBG, CBC and trace amounts of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) within legal limits.

CBD products on the market that contain THC are generally referred to as “full spectrum”. So, for the consumer, this is key to knowing which products to avoid if you are concerned about drug testing or exposure to that component in particular.

In states without recreational or medical marijuana legalization, CBD products derived from hemp are legal as long as they contain THC amounts below the federal limit of 0.3%.

The Entourage Effect

This is the theory that all the active constituents in a CBD oil or tincture have a blend of naturally occurring metabolites and nutrients that enhance the benefits of CBD.

Researchers have found patients taking the broader spectrum CBD extracts not only needed lower doses, but stated that they seem to present a better healing profile… The difference is likely due to the synergistic effects of CBD with all the other phytocompounds, creating an entourage effect.

This is key to understanding the ECS (Endocannabinoid System), a string of receptors in the central nervous system, that is activated by the use of CBD products that include multiple cannabinoids.

Significantly, studies that had patients using cannabinoid-rich extracts had marked improvements, as compared to those treated with purified CBD alone.

There are many cannabinoids and phytocompounds that could be responsible for the success of the delivery and effects of the CBD products you are taking, but looking at a few of the most frequently occurring and well studied cannabinoids will make it much simpler to understand.

CBD – Cannabidiol

CBD is the one of the most abundant compounds found in the hemp plant, and is significantly, the most well studied.

Scientific research has been done on CBD hemp extracts and its impact on stress related conditions, recovery, joints and muscles, skin, and immune functions to support optimal wellness. People have reported positive results with significant improvements in their general sense of health and overall well being.

CBG – Cannabigerol

CBG has been shown to regulate bodily functions such as appetite, mood, sleep, immune system function, and provide comfort to the body.

This cannabinoid is a precursor for other cannabinoids and is thought to interact directly with the CB1 and CB2 receptors in the brain. One study found CBC and CBG may have great potential for regaining balance from trauma, discomfort and swelling in the body and may be more effective than THC.

CBC – Cannabichromene

CBC is a component that may be helpful for deep muscle aches, all-over body tension, some nerve issues and may offer support for mental health conditions.

CBC is widely researched and has demonstrated an increase of THC absorption in the brain; ironically, at the same time, it can reduce the intoxicating effects typically associated with the THC molecule.

CBN – Cannabinol

CBN shares some similar properties to CBD, but is significantly different in how it interacts in the body.  It can be beneficial for balancing sleep, and soothing body tension.

CBN is an oxidation byproduct of THC, which shifts forms when exposed to heat and light.

Levels of CBN are controlled by environmental factors, not the genetics of the plant. It was the first cannabinoid to be isolated from hemp in its natural state in 1899.

CBN studies are few

The effects on humans have not been fully studied. We do know that CBN binds to the CB1 receptors in the ECS (endocannabinoid system) with about 1/10th of the needed dose of THC.

In 2011 the effects of CBN combined with THC were studied, and they found that the addition of CBN increased the effective properties of THC. These molecules seem to work syncretically.

When combined with THC the CBN molecule seems to produce a sedative effect that is beneficial for people needing help with sleeping or reducing anxiety.

The study also used an isolated CBN and found it acted as an appetite stimulant in rats when combined with CBD.

Researchers found that a 2.5-to-5 milligram dose of CBN could be as effective as a 5-to-10 milligram dose of the pharmaceutical sedative diazepam, also known as valium.

We know cannabinoids can help trigger responses to different stimuli. Researchers are continuing to study the effects of CBD, CBG, CBC and CBN on the brain’s receptors involved in the exchange of chemical messages throughout the body.
