Since 1992, Stress Awareness Month has been an ongoing campaign to spread awareness and education about the effects of stress and ways to reduce it to live healthier lives.

Every April is Stress Awareness Month. During this time educators and health care professionals come together to bring public awareness to the causes of stress and share prevention tips.  Stress Awareness Month is a good time to share information that brings our focus to our well-being and spread awareness that there are healthier choices we can make today to improve our tomorrow and the life of future generations.

Our world is under extreme stress environmentally and collectively as communities and individuals.  Stress is sometimes an invisible problem. We all must learn to look deeper at issues and look for new ways to solve our problems.  If we all do our part to simply change some of our destructive habits and share knowledge and alternatives with others, we as a collective can put our focus into solutions and help relieve stress and contribute to a better quality of life.

Training ourselves to see the signs of stress is a good starting point. If we can identify our top three sources of stress in our life we can take a proactive approach to prevent a decline in quality of life and our mental health by finding tools that work for us.

A survey by the American Psychological Association found that the five factors most often cited as a source of stress were money, work, family, economic outlook, and relationships.

We have to learn to work together to reduce stress because it affects us all. It is equally created by circumstances that are outside of our control and the choices that we are in control of. It starts in the home, the workplace, and extends into everything around us. The more we practice making health the priority, we feel better about ourselves and that extends to us helping others and collectively helping our planet.

Here are some effective methods that can reduce stress and improve our quality of life. If you find any of these Stress Awareness Month tips helpful share them with others.

Stress-free-meditation1. Meditation

An effective strategy for managing stress is to learn to quiet our mind and redirect your energy out of worry and doubt to focus on things that are helpful. Meditation is relaxing and can calm you down when you are feeling overwhelmed. Here is a meditation you can do today to reduce stress and increase your brainpower.

Healthy food2. Clean Eating

Fueling your body with healthy meals with plenty of vitamins helps you to keep your gut health in balance. Your gut and your brain are always communicating with each other so keeping your diet clean and balancing the bacteria in your gut will support your brainpower and help you to feel less stressed out.

Loving relationships3. Healthy Relationships

Maintaining healthy relationships is important to keep our support systems strong. Staying in touch with close family and friends that care about your needs and your mental health is important. Stay in communication when going through difficult times and make time to have fun with the ones you love.

Sleep-stress4. Sleep and Rest

Sleep is the biggest contributing factor to stress and overall well-being. A lack of sleep is harmful to your mental health, productivity, and ability to make decisions. If you notice your sleep cycle is off balance or your stress is preventing you from getting quality rest, it is important that you create a mindful bedtime routine and prioritize your sleep.

Exercise and stress5. Exercise

One of the best things to break out of a stressful state and get your mind off of worries is exercise. Make time for 20-45 minutes a day of exercise. Get out and walk, ride a bike, practice yoga, whatever form of exercise you like; make it a part of your daily routine. Exercise has so many benefits and releases stress-reducing hormones.

Self care and stress6. Care for yourself

Make sure you are looking after yourself. Visit a doctor or find a therapist to connect with about your health and how you are feeling. Find the courage to make changes in your life that will help you improve your health and happiness. Don’t give up on yourself. You may be surprised that there are tons of resources and people that want to help!
